What Renewal Means in the Revival of Detroit.
Detroit filed for bankruptcy in 2013 and the population was at around 686 thousand people. People were leaving and never thought about coming back. Businesses left or simply went out of business. Houses were left vacant and trash littered the streets. Instead of letting their city fall apart around them, people decided to take action. They fought for their jobs and wanted to make an effort to make the city great again. Other people from other areas than Detroit noticed and wanted to help. People are coming back to Detroit in order to help make it new again. New businesses are coming to Detroit and their is hope for a future where Detroit is a national powerhouse again. A Detroit where people want to come to and visit.
Urban Farming
Urban Farming has really taken off in Detroit. In 2015, there were around 1400 urban gardens and farms. With vacant land all around them in their neighborhoods, people have started to turn that land into gardens. The gardens help the community in many different ways.
Building Redevelopment
With the city failing and going bankrupt, people and businesses decided to leave the city in bunches. They left behind homes and buildings that were once filled with people but now are empty and vacant. Recently, people came up with the idea to redevelop the old buildings and make new use out of them. One example, which is pictured below, is the redevelopment of The Detroit News building.
What's Being Done
Over the past years, Detroit has started putting money back into the city by redeveloping areas of the city. Downtown is busy again and there are many new business opportunities. Jobs are being created, people are moving back, and Detroit is becoming Detroit again.
